By Colm HeatleyMarch 9 (Bloomberg) -- A police officer has been shot and injured in Northern Ireland late today. The officer was shot in the town of Craigavon, about 30 miles outside Belfast and has been taken to hospital, a police spokeswoman said in a telephone interview.
It might tie in with this story as well:
March 9 (Bloomberg) -- The killers of two soldiers in Northern Ireland must be “hunted down,” British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said after traveling to the province following the first fatal attack on the military there since 1997.
Brown today visited the Massereene barracks, about 16 miles (25 kilometers) north of Belfast, where Cengiz Azimkar, 21, from London, and Mark Quinsey, 23, from Birmingham, were shot late on March 7 during a pizza delivery by at least two men with automatic rifles. The soldiers died at the scene, the Ministry of Defence said on its Web site. Brown also met with the region’s political leaders.
The Real Irish Republican Army, which opposes the peace process that joined the Roman Catholic and Protestant communities in government, said it killed the soldiers. Dissident paramilitaries have carried out sporadic attacks since 1997, after the Irish Republican Army ended its armed campaign to unite Ireland.
