Update:
Shirin Ebadi who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 has taken up Roxana;s cause. As one of the best known people in Iran this is a very good thing , but for for now Iranian officials are blocking access to her.
This is disgusting and heart wrenching all in one, while our President gives warm welcome to tyrants and sends videos to fascist regimes,an NPR reporter and innocent women was given an 8 years sentence over a case that began over a bottle of wine. Saberi was arrested just a couple of months ago, and now is about to vanish into an Iranian prison on trumped up charges of espionage. Apparently Saberi is on a hunger strike in protest, we support you and be strong.
What else has Iran been doing?
- An ongoing crackdown on the internet and the death of one in jail.
- An Iranian drone shot down in Iraq just the other day.
- An Iranian nuclear program that can only exist for weapons.
- We still have Robert Levinson missing.
- In addition Iran has killed hundreds of us soldiers in Iraq.
An Iranian-American journalist branded a US spy has been jailed for eight years by Iran after a brief trial held behind closed doors.
Roxana Saberi, 31, who was arrested in January and went on trial this week, denies the charge and plans to go on hunger strike, her father said. …
The case is bound to have serious implications for relations between Iran and the US at a time when President Barack Obama has been reaching out to the Islamic Republic, the BBC’s Jon Leyne reports from Tehran.
Even before the trial began, the US state department described the charge of spying as baseless and called for her release, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has demanded her release.
From the NY Times:
The sentence comes after Washington has made overtures to Iran about starting a dialogue over its nuclear program. The State Department said on Thursday that Ms. Saberi’s jailing was not helpful and that Iran would gain good will from the United States if it “responded in a positive way” to the case, AP reported.
Ms. Saberi, 31, was arrested in late January on the much lighter charge of buying alcohol. The foreign ministry said later that she was accused of working as a reporter without press credentials, but the prosecutor’s office said this month that she was put on trial for spying . She is held in the country’s notorious Evin prison in Tehran.
She has lived in Iran for six years and worked for National Public Radio (NPR) and the BBC. Authorities revoked her press card in 2006.
The verdict came after an unusually swift trial, which started last Monday. five days. Ms. Saberi was tried behind closed doors.
Of course the President of Iran is Laughing at us:
TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- The Iranian president on Saturday hailed the nation as "one of the strongest in the region" during a celebration to mark Army Day, according to the semi-official Mehr News AgencyTEHRAN, Iran (CNN) — A U.S. journalist was sentenced to eight years in prison Saturday for espionage, her father told NPR Radio.
Roxana Saberi went on trial in Iran earlier this week on charges of spying. Her father Reza Saberi, speaking to NPR from Tehran, said the verdict will be appealed.
TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- A U.S. journalist in Iran was sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage, her father and Iranian media said Saturday -- a sentence that prompted denunciation from the United States
(CNN) -- President Obama called Sunday for the release of a U.S. journalist convicted of espionage in Iran.

The beauty is you stated that Obama wants to make friends... Wait until Iran shoots missiles at the US and we didn't proceed with the missile shield in Europe.
ReplyDeleteUS is a weakened country with a President trying to be everybody's friend.
We also disclosed our detainee methods and close bases that held our enemies...
Best of luck for our future kids of the US. ~ DD
all to true.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this woman really is guilty. A major power like Iran wouldn't jail somebody for nothing. They ARE a civilized country, unlike Somalia. We should be embarrassed that we sent a woman to spy on them and then she was caught. We should be trying to befriend and understand the Persians, not trying to spy on them. We were being sneaky and slimy and they caught us. I'm embarrassed to be an American today. Obama should apologize to the Persians and try to become their ally. They are powerful and we don't need any powerful enemies out there. Let her rot in Jail.
ReplyDeleteRight Moron, you can lie to yourself but Iran is run by thugs.
ReplyDeleteYet another example of the notion these folks are several sandwiches shy of a full picnic basket!
ReplyDeleteAll the yelling and posturing ain't gonna make it so.
I have no doubt should the Iran's decide to throw nasty stuff at us, we can not only field it, but they will become a "glow in the dark" kinda place.
