Mass Rally in Iran as 15 Reported Killed

It hasn't reached the point of no return yet, but its getting close. Is it any wonder the regime is cracking down on the media and now accusing the United States of intervening.

June 17 (Bloomberg) -- Tens of thousands of supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi, the defeated main challenger in the disputed Iranian presidential election, rallied in central Tehran, video on Iranian state television showed, after the biggest protest in 30 years led to as many as 15 deaths.

Two prominent Mousavi backers were detained earlier today, Agence France-Presse reported, after Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei yesterday appealed for unity following a meeting with representatives of candidates in June 12 presidential voting. Also today, the Iranian Foreign Ministry registered a diplomatic protest over what it called “interfering remarks” by U.S. officials on the election, AFP reported. Switzerland’s ambassador in Tehran, who represents U.S. interests, was summoned to hear the complaint, the news agency said.

Video of today’s gathering in Haft Tir Square was also posted on Facebook and follows a June 15 rally that was the largest anti-government demonstration since the Islamic revolution ousted Iran’s shah in 1979, triggered by opposition accusations of vote-rigging to re-elect President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Several people were reported killed. Mousavi has called a mass demonstration tomorrow to mourn the deaths.

Considering the President's stance we discount any notion of US involvement.

  1. U.S. interfering? Why would Obama interfere with the machinations of like-minded tyrants?

  2. This is not just about Mousavi or Ahmadinejad. It is about the entire government. People do NOT want Mollahs to run the country and they have been saying that for 30 years now. Why is that we do not see any support from UN. Aren’t they calling for global democracy all the time???

How else we could have our voice heard? Maybe thousands of innocent people should die in Iran for the world to hear us.

  3. And, why should we care? Do we have any other news or will all news channels continue to recycle regarding Irans voting. The winner was chosen and that's that...nothing will change. Let's shut this down.... Like we can do anything about another country's politics. Let's move on, there is nothing we can do there? I hope this does not go into the weekend. FIND OTHER NEWS

  4. I truly hope President Obama stays the heck out of the mess going on in Iran.... It's over in Iran, the vote has been counted. Like this has not always been - let's leave this alone and hope the Iranians go home b/c they know their country will not change. Iranians know on their part, there is no need to protest, they do not live in a democratic society. Please stop showing this on the news and let's move on. USA nor the united nations can do anything about their voting laws and/or practices. Iranians - go home, they should have done something before the vote. Now they are sounding like winers. Move on...your election is over.
