Team of Rivals: Clinton and Obama with Differing Opinions on Honduras

The Revolution in Honduras has led to some bizarre actions by President Obama who has gone on the record to declare the events illegal, harsher rhetoric then that of Secretary of State Clinton:

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said today the U.S. government is refraining from formally declaring the ouster of Honduras's president a "coup," which would trigger a cutoff of millions of dollars in aid to the Central American country.

Her statement appeared to reflect the U.S. government's caution amid fast-moving events in Honduras, where President Manuel "Mel" Zelaya was detained and expelled by the military yesterday. But the move could put Washington at odds with the rest of the hemisphere, which has roundly condemned the Honduran military's actions.

"We are withholding any formal legal determination," Clinton told reporters at a State Department briefing. She acknowledged, however, that it certainly looked like a coup when soldiers snatched a pajama-clad Zelaya and whisked him off to Costa Rica.

Later in the day, President Obama said the U.S. government believed the takeover was "not legal" and that Zelaya remained the country's leader.

So which is it? So far there has been limited demonstrations, but for how long will we ignore the new government.

  1. The US government has once again misunderstood what is real. President Zelaya has been attempting to take over the government of Honduras by amending the constitutional clause on Presidential term limits. The Honduran Supreme Court has ruled this to be illegal, but "Mel" has persisted. He wants to be another Chavez, with unlimited terms. When Zelaya persisted in his actions, the Honduran Congress and Military took legal action in removing him from the country. We,who live in Honduras, have been stressed in the actions of Zelaya and are glad that some sanity still exists in the country.

Thank you Hillary for getting the facts of the current situation in Honduras and exposing the unspoken reality that lies beneath. Zelaya has been playing the role of a victim all along with his communits alies fully supporting him and directing him on what to say and how to react. Hondurans are tired of being Chavez's next experiment in Latin America. Zelaya is out because we still believe in democracy and will not support any plot against our constitution.

  6. What all these people are saying are lies, they have no proof of what they say, only the elite have internet, only the elite have means to produce such atrocity, Mel zelaya did try to place a referendum, but he was asking the people first, secondly, when you use military, cut off cnn, cut off all the international and national channels that have a diffrent opinion you are violating the freedom of speech of every person in the world. That is one of the guarantees the constitution of HOnduras has, the people who were chosen are not leading the country, a group of ex military forces are, the group that along with all the elite produce this coup, there is no other way to look at, your law states he should be impeached, that is the correct way, and mistreatment of his person and familiy and cabinet violates every human right you say to protect in your country. Why do you all think they are taking so long to produce proof, they dont have any and their making it up. They used the military right now to scare people, 14 people have been killed and disappeared for protesting, what type of democracy is that. You are all closing your eyes trying to believe you did no wrong, but you did and now the world will turn their backs on your ilegal democracy full of corrupt people, the only diffrence is which side your on. So stop posting lies, you should all feel ashamed of yourself for not using your own process, state in your constitution on how to impeach a president. Just an example, your president of congress ran for the presidency, it was ilegal for him to do it but he did, i did not see you all jump against this. The liberal candidate was vice president, your constitution says he cannot be a candidate for president when your vice president, you did not do anything then. How should we believe all your lies about defending your constitution and you all saying that it was not a coup when your city is militarized. I hope you all learn one day what democracy means. Power to the people, by the people for the people. You all made a mistake and now your finding that out. I heard that you are planning to get everybody out to show the world that your happy, i want to see the rest of your country saying that, not just people with money, which is probably corrupt.

  7. Imagine this hypothetical situation: George W. Bush comes up with the idea that the USA needs him for a third term and since the United States constitution doesn’t allow a third consecutive term for a sitting president he decides that he wants to change the constitution and decides to hold a nationwide referendum on the matter with only six months left on his presidential mandate. The US Congress, the Senate and even all the political parties (including the Republican Party) unanimously oppose Bush’s idea but he doesn’t care and goes ahead with the referendum. Furthermore he enlists the help of the Venezuelan government to manage the ballots for the vote, etc. Would US citizens just sit in their homes and allow him to do whatever he wants? Now replace the name George W. Bush with Manuel Zelaya and the country with Honduras. Please, don’t allow this traitor to come back to Honduras. It’s wrong, immoral and against the law and it will bring such instability to the Central American countries that the entire region would eventually fall to communism. Is this what the US government really wants?

  8. As a US citizen who was born in Honduras I have been following the details of these events for the last 3 years. Ousted president Zelaya violated the constitution of the republic, the same constitution he promised to protect when he took office. Honduran people are tired of him and they do NOT want him back in Honduras. Of course there is a group of supporters, normally a group of public employee or paid agitators who the international media are portraying as a "big group".
The Honduran people do NOT want the country on the path to comunism and dictadorship. The comments of Obama and Hillary Clinton only demoralized the people of Honduras. President Mel Zelaya has exposed his antipathy against the US and Obama and Clinton have dissapointed the brave people of Honduras.

  9. Obama has rushed in taking a position on the side of Hugo Chavez. The same character who has insulted the U.S. over and over again. The people of Honduras feels now powerless against the position of a country they have traditionally felt an friend.
There is not question now about the real ideas of Obama, and now it makes more sense to me, the expressions during the last campaign when we was accused of being a socialist by the right in this country.

He does not question the legality of Hugo Chavez's elections in Venezuela, he took too long to finally critize the government of Iran when crushed the protesters, but has rushed to critized the legal act of the different sectors of Honduras in removing the socialist President Zelaya.

  10. My family are not part of the "elite" they are all hard working middle class Hondurans who have struggled to achieve their dreams.
A lot of them voted for Mel Zelaya, because he ran on a democratic platform. Little did they know that a few months later he would start changing and becoming a socialist/leftist and Chavez' best friend.
He fills his mouth with beautiful promises of more equality and a better life for the poor when he himself is a member of the "elite".
He is a RICH landowner, just because he wears guayaberas and that cowboy hat on his head he thinks people have forgotten where he and his family come from and what they have. His showhorses probably eat better than most low-income children in Honduras.
Does he think that because Chavez and Castro call him "comrade" we haven't noticed his private plane, his daughter's shopping sprees to Miami, his expensive cowboy boots?
A few misled and blinded followers on the street will not change the fact that most Hondurans are rejoicing over this.
It is not democracy that we are rejecting when we reject Zelaya, but his lies and his illegal power-hungry moves.
Besides, just like Chavez and Castro do not want interference in their countries neither do we. And Zelaya's promise of bringing in Cuban teachers to indoctrinate our children on the differences between imperialism and socialism fills us with dread.
We didn't allow it to happen in the early 80's we're not going to let it happen now.
If the world can't see past his charade then at least let us handle it on our own.

  11. Many are just grossly uniformed about what happened in Honduras. As a Honduran born who has been following the ousted president Manuel Zelaya, I clearly applaud the decision of the people and the democratic institution in Honduras to remove him. Obama does not have any saying in this busines neither any other socialist president.
Honduran people have decided and should be left to resolve their own issues. Unfortunately the left mainstream media in America, the socialist Obama and the group of socialist presidents in LatinAmerica who by the way hate us (the U.S.), are now portraying Mel Zelaya as a victim.
Please let Hondurans to resolve their business and to the brave people of Honduras, do NOT brake and stay firm for a better future of your children.

  12. Congratulation to the Honduran People. As I expressed on the local newspapers from Honduras on Sunday, do NOT expect an approval from Obama, he is NOT a friend of the freedom and democracy in the world. He is the enemy. Barack Hussein Obama is your enemy. Stay strong and committed to freedom as you decided, stay strong and united against the Socialism. The Hondurans are showing bravery and teaching a lessons to other nations.

  13. As a Honduran who has followed this ousted president closely and have my family in Honduras I tell you.
This is NOT a coup! Yes, he was democratically elected by the people under the platform of a democratic candidate. However, he violated the laws and pretended to remain in power beyond the limits allowed by the constitution.
This was a decision taken by the other two powers; the congress and the supreme court and still has the support of the poeple who are happy that Mel is no longer there.
He pushed for a change of the constitution even though the same constitution does NOT allow that. He was trying to sell an "innocent referendum" to ask the "poors".
The people of Hondurans found him as a violator of the Constitution and the laws and decide to remove him. What is the problem?
In Honduras there is no impeachment process in the laws, as we have in the U.S. Is that clear? The supreme court found multiple violations to the laws including his actions to dissolve the congress upon the results of the "referendum" which by the way was illegal. That figure was illegal at this moment and he was warned about it. He refused and decided to continue with his plans.
As you can hear now, Hugo Chavez has his hands deeply in Honduras as well. Therefore, he is very angry that his plans are now destroyed. This ousted president wanted to fool the Hondurans and paid the price.

I want to clarify. The current president is a member of the same political party the ousted president belonged. Even the same party's congresspeople rejected him.

If they had waited longer they would have not been able to do anything later.
