A judge this afternoon set Nov. 12 as the new sentencing date for former Jefferson County Commissioner Mary Buckelew.Prosecutors asked that the sentencing be continued until after the bribery trial of Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford.Buckelew is expected to testify at the trial, set to start Oct. 19 in Tuscaloosa.
Buckelew agreed to cooperate "fully and truthfully" with the government in exchange for prosecutors recommending a lenient sentence. Prosecutors have agreed to recommend that Buckelew receive credit for accepting responsibility and a sentence at the low end of sentencing guidelines, which could be in the range of 12 to 18 months. She could get more of a break if prosecutors deem she has provided substantial assistance.
"It is anticipated that the defendant will continue to provide assistance and may testify during an upcoming trial which will begin Oct. 19 and may last two weeks," Assistant U.S. Attorney George Martin wrote in a motion.
Of course if Langford decided to testify against that institutions that are alleged to have paid him off, then there might be fireworks.
