Jefferson County will claim its stake on $1.6 million from court-ordered payments from former Mayor Larry Langford and two political associates also convicted on public corruption charges.A Jefferson County Commission committee voted Wednesday to file a petition seeking the money, according to Commissioner Jim Carns. Carns said seeking restitution is standard procedure in similar cases.
Financier Bill Blount and lobbyist Al LaPierre were convicted last year along with Langford for a pay-for-play scheme. Blount and LaPierre were convicted for funneling money to Langford to direct county business to Blount’s investment company. Langford was Jefferson County Commission president at the time of the bribery scandal.
Langford was ordered by the court to pay $241,843. Blount was ordered to pay $1 million and LaPierre was ordered to pay $371,932. The county’s ability to recover any funds depends on what assets of those convicted are available. Carns said the county will file the petition to ensure it receives its portion of any monies collected.
Being 3.2 billion in the hole is bad enough and i million is hardly true recompense, but its a start. By the way Langford managed to tell a local student newspaper he expects to die in prison for his crimes.
