When Larry Langford reports to prison Wednesday, he will leave a decades-long political career for a federally-issued uniform, a schedule that dictates his movements, and a code of conduct that prohibits one of his favorite pastimes -- smoking.
The former Birmingham mayor is one night away from beginning a 15-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution Ashland in northeast Kentucky.
Langford, 64, was convicted in October on 60 counts that include bribery, fraud, money laundering and conspiracy tied to his time on the Jefferson County Commission. Langford, who took an estimated $235,000 in bribes, was ordered to pay $119,985 in back taxes and forfeit $241,843. He has appealed his conviction.
Tip of the iceberg my friends.
